Australia flights are available from a range of UK airports with connections in London, the Middle East or the Far East. These make excellent places for a stopover along the way. Flight times will take anything from around 19 hours on the fastest flights to Perth to around 30 hours with longer connections.
Direct flights to Sydney take around 22 hours. Peak season will generally be regarded as around November to February and the school holiday periods. Flight prices will tend to rise at these times, making early booking and price comparison particularly important. |

Flying into Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD) and the City of Sydney gives you the chance to pay a visit to the iconic Sydney Opera House for a photo or of course a great concert, or take the trying Harbour Bridge walk for a stunning view of the cityscape. Just a short bus ride from the city centre will bring you to the beaches of Bondi and Coogee. Travelling south from Sydney will bring you to the Blue Mountains, whereas journeying north will lead you to Surfer's Paradise and the Gold and Sunshine coasts.
Many international flights to Australia will also enter the country via Perth International Airport (PER) which is situated in the west. |
Landing in the capital of Western Australia puts you in prime position to explore some of the state's vast, expansive coastline. Visiting the beaches of Sorrento, Scarbough or Cottesloe will give you a taste of the Aussie beach and barbeque culture or head north to Monkey Mia to feed wild bottlenose dolphins. Travelling further north still will find you in the blissed out city of Broome.
Arriving via Melbourne Tullamarine Airport (MEL) you will see a distinctly greener corner of Australia. The more European atmosphere of Melbourne and the state of Victoria appeals to many Brits, as does its strong cultural and musical heritage.
Travelling from Melbourne you may want to take the short flight (just over an hour) to Adelaide International Airport (ADL), from here you can visit the wine region of the Barossa Valley, the vast gorges of the Flinders Ranges, or take in the scenic coastal drive of the Great Ocean Road. Alternatively hop a flight to the Airport of Hobart (HBA) on the island of Tasmania and discover the island's lively capital and rainforest nature trails.
Taking a flight to Brisbane International Airport (BNE) will place you perfectly on the east coast to travel south for holidays on the Gold Coast, the fun and entertainment capital of Australia with its casinos and resort hotels. Heading north you can visit the town of Airlie Beach, Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsunday Islands or further north to Townsville and Magnetic Island.
Heading to the very top of the east coast will bring you to the small city of Cairns. Situated in the very heart of northern Queensland, the city is predominantly used by tourists as a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, with diving and snorkelling boats leaving daily. The northern tip of the island, Cape Tribulation is also easily reachable from the city. Predominantly internal flights are available into the Airport of Cairns (CNS).
If you can handle the heat take a trip up north the Airport of Darwin (DRW) in the Northern Territories. Discover the picturesque Darwin harbour and uncover the Australian Aboriginal's strong roots to the area. If you don't fancy the drive to the red centre, take a flight to Alice Springs Airport (ASP) and visit Uluru (Ayers Rock) which rises 348 metres out of the scrubland and appears to change colour at sunrise and sunset.
